Giving Is Important

Giving is important

You’ve probably heard that before. “Your giving is important”. And you might say to yourself, “Sure, it’s important… to the church”. But when a church says “Giving is important”, they mean it’s important to you. Why? Keep reading…

  1. God says to do it. Our role is to believe and be obedient to His word. “Bring your tithe to the temple” (Malachi 3). If He’s our “Lord”, we do what he says. If we don’t do what He says, then we are being lord of our own lives. Jesus said “why do you call me Lord, and not do what I say?”. This especially applies to us with our money.

  2. God instructs us to give - for our benefit. God says in Malachi “Bring your tithe to the temple and see if I won’t pour out blessings from heaven that you won’t have room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sake (Malachi 3 paraphrased).” God wants to bless us - like a good, loving father wants to bless his children. God wants us to live a blessed life - and He tells us how.

  3. Giving breaks our grip on materialism. Jesus said “do not store up treasure on earth where moth and rust destroy, but store up treasure in heaven where moth and rust do not destroy (paraphrased)”. This life is short. We are temporary residents. God wants us to realize that eternity with Him is much more important, and live like that on a daily basis now.

I could go on and on… In fact, the Bible talks about money a lot. Probably because God knows it’s His #1 competition for our hearts. Jesus said “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matthew 6:21)”. God doesn’t want our money - but He wants our heart.
