Is Giving Tuesday Good?

Leave it to me to quash something many people find as great.

Giving Tuesday - we all get the concept.  AFTER we’ve spent all the money on a Turkey Feast and AFTER we’ve gone in the red on our personal finances on black Friday and AFTER we sold our highest treasures so we could reap lesser treasures on Cyber Monday THEN let’s give what’s left on Giving Tuesday.  Shouldn't we just call it “Leftover’s Tuesday?”

Ok Ok Ok - perhaps a little bit of a harsh indictment of what is a generally great concept.  What’s great about Giving Tuesday?  Two things that stand out to me:

  1. Awareness.  If half the battle is knowing there is a need, then Giving Tuesday has certainly provided a platform to display some incredible organizations doing extraordinary work.  illuminate church partners with many such organizations such as the Batey Rehab Project which is fighting human trafficking in the Dominican Republic, and the Faith and Law Group which provides faith based lectures on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C..  These are two of our ministry partners raising funds this Giving Tuesday - learn more!  Be aware.  Get involved!  Awareness is a good thing!

  2. Generosity.  II Corinthians 9:7 reminds us that “God loves a cheerful giver.”  Generosity is not confined to the wealthy, but to those who give out of the joy in their heart.  And wow, God loves this!  When we have any amount of resource that we could have spent on this, that, or the other yet we choose to give it away to bless another, that moves the heart of God because that IS the heart of God.  When we give in generosity, we give as God did.

Hmmmm - maybe this Giving Tuesday thing isn’t such a bad idea after all.

I am grateful to the men, women and children who give faithfully year round to the Lord’s work at illuminate church.   We are helping people find life in Jesus Christ right here in Central Florida and around the world with our ministry partners.  If you are inspired to give today, to join in the movement of Giving Tuesday, we welcome your generous, fully aware gift.  We will honor your giving as the first fruits of the Lord.  If you desire to give today, you can click the button below.
